Overwatch: Who is DOOMFIST?

aaa

With all the persistent rumours about the possibility of Doomfist being a new Overwatch hero being launched on the 24th of May on the occasion of the game's one year anniversary, with thought it opportune to detail what we currently know about Doomfist.

For starters, Doomfist is not one character, but is a title carried by three individuals called 'The Saviour' (Adhabu Ngumi), 'The Scourge' (Akinjide Adeyemi) and 'The Successor', and the common feature between all three, is a mechanical gauntlet seemingly capable of immense destruction. The gauntlet was appropriated by Overwatch after Winston defeated him, and it was put on display in an Overwatch Museum. Later, Widowmaker and Reaper attempted to steal the gauntlet, and a fight ensued between the two Talon agents on one hand, and Winston and Tracer on the other. Ultimately, the attempt was foiled when a young boy called Brian (a StarCraft 2 fan apparently, having the Raynor's Raiders logo on the back of his hoodie) donned the gauntlet and used it to great effect against Widowmaker. The gauntlet released a sphere of red energy and electricity, and knocked Widowmaker back a long way, though she quickly resumed her jumping about.

Doomfist's gauntlet was then transferred to Numbani for Unity Day celebrations, and of course, it used to be on the payload in the playable Numbani map. Doomfist remained a threat to human-omnic peace, and in fact Numbani maintained OR-15 defense robots (generic Orisa-like units) to protect against Doomfist. Ultimately however, Doomfist defeated the OR-15s, and stole the gauntlet, leaving a mess behind at Numbani airport (as can be seen on Numbani after the Orisa update).

In the game lore, Doomfist seems to be an ally of Talon (Reaper, Widowmaker). The original Doomfist, The Saviour, seems to have been from south-eastern Africa, as his name, Adhabu Ngumi is actually Swahili for 'Doom Fist'. The second bearer of the Doomfist title, The Scourge, seems to be of Nigerian origin as indicated by his name Akinjide Adeyemi. which means "the return of the strong one" and "the crown suits me well". The successor is yet unidentified, and is possible the playable hero. His name is visible on the posters, but it is written in an Omnic language, and which rumours say might mean that the latest Doomfist is either an Omnic, or is partially an Omnic.

The images of the three 'Doomfists' also clearly show three different gauntlets. The Saviour's gauntlet seems to be very simplistic, and looks to be little more than a spiked knuckle duster with support on the wrist and the elbow. On the other hand, The Scourge's gauntlet is the closest to the one on display at the Overwatch Museum and Numbani, being a mechanical construct covering the entirety of the forearm. An in-game announcement in Numbani also indicates that the gauntlet belongs to the Scourge, however, the Scourge is shown wearing the gauntlet on his left hand, whilst the one shown on display is right-handed. The successor's gauntlet, is much larger, covering the entire arm up to the shoulder, with intimidating spikes on the upper arm and shoulder.

Another indication of the possibity of a Doomfist release, is in his possible voice-actor. American actor Terry Crews, infamous for deodorant commercials, indicated interest in voicing Doomfist, to the extent that he even posted an audition video. Blizzard went on to invite him to their studio, though it remains unclear whether he has indeed been tasked to voice the character.

Will we get a new hero so soon after Orisa? Will it even be Doomfist? Doomfist looks to be a DPS character, of which there are already 7, as opposed to 6 defense heroes, 6 tanks and 5 support characters. It's all still very unclear, and pure Blizzard fashion!
